The very definition of the word salacious can make the tongue wander to parts of the mind where sexual explosions occur. The magazine Salacious oddly enough has the very same effect on every inch of your body and mind.

In its infantile stage of its barely prepubescent second edition this hand crafted erotic magazine leaves very little to the imagination. I was asked gently and consensually to review their second edition with an objective but proficient manner. I was completely unaware that their stunning layout of 64 pages would take me many days to conquer because frankly, it was just that hot of a read.

The theme of the magazine was Voyeurism. This theme accented each photo, image and story with all the varying aspect of the simple sexual pleasure of watching others enjoy pleasure. The extremely large spectrum in which voyeurism spreads has the depth to create dynamic sexual story lines that can entice pretty much everyone. Salacious’ second edition provides all this and more.

The actual layout of the magazine is extremely text heavy. As a linguistic fetish freak I thoroughly enjoyed the lengthy short erotic story selections. There were a few diversions from this set-up where some select poems/prose where thrown into the mix. The slight differences in these visual set-ups where striking and further inclusions of these styled erotic pieces would be great for the diversity of future Salacious editions.

It was honestly a hard decision to narrow down my favorite literary excursions from the second edition of this Salacious. Some of top contenders that left me in a nerdy sex-brain stupor were some of the more creative voyeuristic scenarios. Whether it was the last minute jerk-off caught wet handed in ‘Going Down’, the technological voyeurism through web cams and secret trysts in ‘Other Duties’ or the spectacular stolen sexual encounters between an art muse in the sky and a lover below in ‘This is How I see You Watching Me’ which was my favorite one by far.

All of the enticing literary descents were punctuated by cleverly sexy hand drawn images. Whether it was depicting illicit sex between two strangers meeting or someone being caught behind a fence pleasuring themselves, this illustrated porn was refreshing. The pen has a way of capturing the diversity of sexual experiences that photographic pictures are unable to translate. These particular illustrations definitely make Salacious stand out in a fantastic way from other previous erotic publications.

Included in this edition of Salacious were some featured journalistic pieces about the Sex Worker Film Festival and the IMSL contest, both held in San Francisco. These pieces were extremely informative from the perspectives of people involved in both of the events. Unfortunately neither of these pieces fit in with the overall tone and theme of the magazine but it was a nice mental break from the hot erotica.

Another great aspect of this edition of Salacious were the wonderfully placed ads for all types of queer/feminist/independent porn companies and sex toy vendors. It was a great visual resource for anyone who wanted to find something sexy to play with or awesome videos to further continue the excitement that was building from just enjoying the magazine. My favorite was the two page spread for the Crash Pad Series, which is an online website by Pink and White Productions in San Francisco.

Salacious is a fantastic publication that creates a safe space for all types of sexuality to have creative expression. Each story and image creates a new level of sexy and sexual experience that can cater to anyone’s needs or desires. No matter how you identify or how sex is defined for you, Salacious has a story for you somewhere hidden in the pages of their second edition.

I challenge anyone to read it all in one setting without having to take care of some ‘personal business’.

july 19th. the day had been ingrained in my head for years. i was not allowed to forget it no matter how hard i tried. it was almost ten years ago this year but still i remember. the first couple of years i would fearfully glance at the upcoming summer months in dreadful anticipation willing the days to just skip over the 19th. In the last few years i was granted a small emotional reprieve that would absentmindedly allow me to glide to july 19th without much of a thought. a few noted july 19ths were devastating after the initial one. a few were glorious. days that shone brightly in my mind.
yesterday was not one of those days. yesterday was not july 19th. yesterday was march 23rd. just a few days after the spring equinox. flowers are finally starting to bloom in the dark grey and gloom of the pacific northwest. but still i panicked in that same manner as july 19th. it really took me a few hours to figure out the source of absolute and shockingly strong fear towards such a simple appointment as was yesterday. i am no stranger to doctors. to sterile offices. to needles. to tests. to more tests. to just one more test. to tell me how you feel. to diagnosis. to assessment. to second diagnosis. to repeat.

but this. this was simple. this procedure was nothing. tiny. 5 minutes of time and two advil. in and out with the click of my debit card. many women i knew had been here before and were never to return until the clock ticked five years past. i was not alone in what i was doing.
this is not what my body heard. my body heard a quick nod back to the first july 19th. and it all changed.
when i realized that it was the memory of july 19th i began to feel a little ashamed of the whole process. which worsened my fear to unbearable. i had always dealt with july 19th in a very proper and intellectual manner. i grieved but i grieved into a pretty little box for a small amount of time. i couldn’t bear to consciously give any time to july 19th that was already being ripped unconsciously from me.
nothing felt fair all of sudden. i had not accounted when i chose yesterday’s procedure that it was going to be the first time in almost ten years that my body was going to be entered in the same format as july 19th. there is no way to change body memories that are that intimate. the motions are the same. the rooms are the same. and to my complete disbelief the procedures felt the same as well. the only difference was that one procedure was taking something out of me and one procedure was putting something in me. same spot. same place. the body never forgets.

there were many other similarities. i started bleeding on a day that wasn’t my period. i was sent home wearing a pad and i never wear pads. the doctor talked sweetly to me but with a tone that assured this was completely normal. i felt severe nausea after wards. the only prescription they gave me was advil and that worked like a placebo. i went home alone. a friend came over for dinner. i fell asleep on the couch crying silently.
so innocently the same it was disturbing. i was .0000002 ounces heavier yesterday while on july 19 i was .0000001 lighter (copper is heavier than flesh). the tears felt the same. heavy and wet. like they were covering me in a thick coating of protection from everything in the world. still ten years later all i wanted as i closed my eyes was for someone to just hold my hand.

i know what i chose to do yesterday will ultimately guide me in the direction of a healthier life. i have no doubt about this. but it was out of necessity that i chose yesterday’s procedure not out of desire. this was a last road on the left dead end no turning around kind of choice. i felt the same way on july 19. i can’t say yesterday was a positive move forward or negative step back. its hard when the two lines jump around all over the board. one day a negative can seem positive and one day a positive can be ten paces back to ten years ago.
as i write this i am in pain where i sit. the body never forgets and still i cry old tears i never had the chance to properly shed.

When I was a wee little kitty growing up in the pains of a NJ childhood, I remember that I had always wished for a helpful guidebook for the special times in life.
More blatantly: solid sexual health information and empowerment that spoke to me in my language, in my age range and understanding of all the very interesting situations I found myself in.

Whether it was having having feelings for my girlfriends, to not quite understanding what birth control was, to speaking in frank terms with my sexual partners before, during and after the multiple sexual acts were performed. Or learning how to have effective communication with my partners in break-ups or even early dating. Or about coming out to my partners. Or to understanding where my clit was (I used to claim I didn’t have one – I KNOW HILARIOUS) to where my g-spot always was. All of those things.

I wish. I wish. I wish. I wish that Scarleteen had been around when I was younger.

Truth – (Clarification: It was around when I was younger but I didn’t have much access to the internet then nor did I think about searching for amazing sexual health information on the internet at that time in my life. I was more interested in porn.) /Truth

So now you’re wondering… WHAT IS SCARLETEEN.

Sorry to yell but it’s just really exciting. Scarleteen is an amazingly extensive online sexual health information hub for youth. Youth is generally-speaking but all of Scarleteen’s content caters to an audience that is discovering themselves, their physical bodies and the way to properly interact those two pieces with the rest of the world. In a traditional sense the topics covered are reminiscent of my high school Sex Ed class back in the 90s but the only difference is that the topics are more relevant and emotionally sensitive to the truth of today’s youth.

When I say relevant, I mean that me watching a movie from the late 70s about pads and menstruation belts is not going to be the best (or most accurate way) for me to learn about my period in the 90s. In fact it was kinda silly and extremely awkward. This is a perfect example as to why I needed Scarleteen in my life then.

I could gush and gush about Scarleteen for many more words…
- for including section topics like Pink Slip, Skin Deep, Gaydar and Sexual Politics
- for having awesome message boards that act as a safe space for youth to express their thoughts and feelings about their sexuality
- for having a (SOON!) database of doctors that provide rad/stellar/sensitively emotional sexual healthcare
- for sponsoring empowering leadership spaces for feminists age 10-25 like the All Girl Army

like I said… gush, gush, gush. *blush*

So this amazing organization is run by two staff and 12 volunteers. I know. Surprising, amazing, inspiring – all of them together.
The main force behind the whole operation is a fantastically motivated spirit, otherwise known as Heather Corinna. One day I hope to meet them in person. Stunning.

Real and proper sexual health education is extremely important to everyone. Youth especially in today’s age are experiencing burgeoning sexuality with a new found veracity that is only amplified by existence in our in-person world AND our digital world. It is a severe disservice to not provide accurate information to them that covers the range of their experience, in their language, on their playing field, in real time.

Scarleteen provides this and then some. Above and beyond Scarleteen is helping to cultivate an informed and sexually positive youth community.

today is quite the day of holiday gatherings, stuffed belly fillings, general sitting around of doing nothings and days off of work in attempts to remember… something.

What exactly was it that we were remembering today (this weekend) again? I CAN’T REMEMBER. need. moar. pie.

Well. coincidentally enough.. there were MANY holidays on this particular celebratory celebration of sorts. pick your poison and know what you might inadvertently be celebrating.


NATIONAL COMING OUT DAY – OCTOBER 11th

this is a day of joyous rebirthing. a coming of age and a ceremoniously witness of identity, support and love. National Coming Out Day is a national recognized day of support for people of the LGBTQ community who are struggling to come out about their sexual identity, gender identity or sexual orientation. By lessoning the stigma that is raised when people choose to out themselves (on a variety of levels and issues) then more people would have the courage of living authentic lives with the support of their peers, loved ones and surround communities.

I’m OUT and PROUD. I am a queer femme. I officially came out in 2004 but struggled for many years before outing myself. I stand as an ally with others who are outing themselves as well today. Only together can we change.

*cries* (UPDATE: please take a look and support the Trevor Project. this organization is a great support and information vehicle for LGBTQ youth and suicide prevention.)

Reconsider Christopher Columbus Day – CHRISTOPHER COLUMBUS DAY – OCTOBER 12

the recognized and recounted history of the united states is often a bit askew and largely misrepresents the truth of the past in historical accuracy. thus said we have lived in the deep dark bubble of IGNORANCE long enough. in the world of technology and the internet there is NO EXCUSE not to educate yourself on the origins of stories, events and especially holidays. this video about Reconsider Columbus Day is a true testament to where the United States needs to go with its recognized history. The level of ignorance we (americans) have been living at for the past (WHO KNOWS HOW MANY) years is harmful, destructive and complacent.

10/10/10 – NUMBER 42 DAY & GLOBAL WORK PARTY DAY – OCTOBER 10TH

So October 10th was TWO very drastically different yet extremely similar holidays. First was the Global Work Party day that was organized by the lovely people at 350.org. This organization is a rapidly evolving and nonstop information base for all things related to climate change and climate justice. The number 350 is the successfully determined maximum level of carbon dioxide that can be present in the earth’s atmosphere and still allow the planet to continue in a healthy manner. (UPDATE: our current CO2 is 386.80 ppm from CO2 Now.)
350 ppm = 350 parts of carbon dioxide to 1 million parts of the gaseous material that makes up the earth’s atmosphere.
So they had a work party. i know i know… i hear you saying – A WORK PARTY? wtf the is a WORK PARTY.
well the thing is – that in order to maintain the world and fight for adequate climate justice, it takes alot of WORK. some of this work you can to do a large levels, in political environments, and some of this work you can do in your own backyard garden. so this Global Work Party was motivating people to do the work that they could do in their very own communities!
Thousands (i repeat THOUSANDS) of people participated in this global event. Check out the map listing of all the 10/10/10 Global Work Party events in the world. mind boggling.

AND funny enough… for all your geeks and nerds out there. 10/10/10 = 10.10.10 = 42 = which is the answer to the universe.

ps. is it a coincidence that the undisputed day that is the answer to the universe/life is also the Global Work Party day? i think NOT.

CANADIAN THANKSGIVING – OCTOBER 11th

unlike its american counterpart (which is later in the year but earlier in its historical birth) the canadian celebration of thanksgiving is more or less a thankful event that marks the end of harvest. I don’t know how this translates into stuffing your face full of turkey, eating pie and watching football but the canadians might have taken a few lessons from the americans over the years. BUT the canadian history of the holiday has a bit more pagan feel to it which warms my witchy woo woo heart. STILL. NEED. MOAR. pie.
